At a variety of competitions throughout the year, students are invited to perform in solo, duo/trio events. These are usually in jazz style, with occasional opportunities for hip hop, contemporary and lyrical solos too.

Some dancers may also wish to give the improvisation solo sections a go. Solo/Duo/Trio events are a great confidence builder for our dancers and expose them to a new form of competition!

What is a Solo?

A solo is when the dancer performs a short routine, by themselves, on the dance floor. For students 8/U and 10/U, this will be pre-choreographed by a Showgroup teacher and well rehearsed with your child. 12/U, 14/U and 15/O are all self choreographed.

Your child will be allocated a number, and they will perform in heats with other dancers on the floor to the same song. Judges select numbers based on each heats' performance and selected numbers progress to the next round.

This style of competition is great for dancers to work on their facial performance and spatial awareness, as well as team spirit for members of our own studio, and others.

What is a Duo or Trio?

A duo/trio is when 2 or 3 dancers perform the same short routine together, on the dance floor. Duos and Trios compete together against each other, therefore it is not possible to enter both a duo and trio. For students 8/U and 10/U, this will be pre-choreographed by a Showgroup teacher and well rehearsed with your child. 12/U, 14/U and 15/O are all self choreographed.

Your child's duo/trio will be allocated a group number, and they will perform in heats with other couples/trios on the floor to the same song. Judges select numbers based on each heats' performance and selected numbers progress to the next round.

This style of competition is great for dancers to work on their facial performance and spatial awareness, as well as team spirit for members of our own studio, and others.

What is an Improv Solo?

An improv solo is an improvised short routine that is not pre-choreographed. Dancers who enter this section will be allocated a number, and enter the floor with other dancers in heats to perform for the judges. They will be played about 15 seconds of the song they will dance to.

Then, the dancer will improvise a short routine. Judges select numbers based on each heats' performance and selected numbers progress to the next round.

This style of competition is great to challenge dancers on their creativity and expression, as well as developing their understanding of music and storytelling.
